What is the monthly income of savings?

Savings is still the most popular application in Brazil, probably because it is people's first contact with the investment world.

However, its yield is much lower than that of other applications, which even have more security and liquidity (ie, ease and agility to redeem the amount invested with due yield).

Savings income today

According to the new savings calculation rule, today its annual yield is 70% of the Selic (basic rate of our economy) plus the TR (reference rate, which is now zero).

The Selic rate is at 4.5%, but we consider the Selic Over, which is usually slightly lower, 4.4%. Thus, the annual return on savings is 70% from 4.4, ie:

or

0.257% per month

This means that if you invest $1,000 in savings today, in a month's time you will have$ 1,002.57 (make other simulations).

On profitability, security and "false" liquidity

The return on savings is low compared to other investment alternatives, such as Treasury Direct, CDBs and some investment funds. Inslusive, if you consider the effect of inflation over the investment period, your money may simply lose value.

As for security, the money invested in a savings account is guaranteed by the FGC (Credit Guarantee Fund) up to R \$ 250 thousand (by CPF and by financial institution).

So, theoretically, the application is safe up to this value. However, investing in Treasury Direct can be considered safer than saving, as government bonds are 100% guaranteed by the National Treasury. This means that the only risk we have is for the country to break (but if it does, everything else tends to break together, even affecting savings guarantees).

In terms of liquidity, that is, how quickly you can redeem your money with the proper income, savings are poor. This is because the income only occurs on the anniversary of it, every 30 days.

For example, if you want to redeem the money 20 days after the last anniversary of the savings, you can do it right away, but you will not earn the income commensurate with those 20 days. Therefore, we have a kind of "false" liquidity, which does not occur in the other investments mentioned, which have daily returns.
